Jillian recently heard a retelling of John chapter 13. Soon afterward she wanted to wash everyone's feet in our house. So we pulled out a basin, filled it with warm water and soap. We instantly had context for a family meeting. It was fun and silly, as we made jokes about Dad's big and smelly feet. Why is it always easiest to make fun of a dad doing something different? :-)
This picture of Jillian washing her little brother Conor's feet holds a powerful reminder of an ageless truth. When someone does something special and thoughtful for another it creates a humbling atmosphere. And that's what our home was like that night. It reminded me that Jesus came so long ago to live a life that was an example of looking at people through a lens of love, service, truth and humility. It became a moment we could forever reference. "Remember washing each other's feet? Jesus taught us something about the way we're meant to live."
Jillian's uninhibited excitement about doing what Jesus did for his apprentices was good for me to see. I want that to be true of my life. When I see someone doing what's right I want to follow that example; to recreate it in my life. May I never forget to learn from my children.
"Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." John 13:14-15
Peace.
