This guy is speaking into people like a prophet to the culture. Man that is too rare, to see a celebrity who uses his influence for the common good. Only a handful of celebs dare to go there. Bono from U2 is doing some great things with third world debt and AIDS in Africa.
When someone rises up like Cosby on this issue they will inevitably take some hits. And he has. And he is speaking right back - and certainly with his actions. Thank God. Here are some sound bites to get a glimpse into the man's heart.
-Quote: "We have got to take the neighborhood back... I can't even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you ain't'; 'Where you is'... You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth." -- At a Brown vs. Board of Education 50th Anniversary event, May 17 · Quote: "For me there is a time... when we have to turn the mirror around... Because for me it is almost analgesic to talk about what the white man is doing against us. And it keeps a person frozen in their seat, it keeps you frozen in your hole you're sitting in." -- To activists in Chicago, July 1 · Quote: "This is all about your careers, your lives... The more you study, the better you do now, the more will open up to you later." -- To two black youths he plans to put through college, July 6
So the story just broke that he's putthing these two guys through the college of thier choice. They caught his eye because they've overcome the odds to get jobs and sustain life together whilce making it through high school Now they both want to go through college. I'm glad Cosby isn't just talking, he's doing something. Too few of us are willing to follow through with action.
The role of the prophet in the Bible was always to speak into people and the culture to call them back to God's ways. I'm not sure where Bill Cosby is drawing his inspiration, but it looks pretty good: personal responsibility; hard work; study; make something of yourself. A message could be worse. I can't help but think the Creator finds pleasure in such goodness.
I find hope in seeing little signs of God's goodness through unlikely people and events.
"The kingdom of God doesn't come by counting the days on the calendar. 21Nor when someone says, "Look here!' or, "There it is!' And why? Because God's kingdom is already among you." - Jesus, quoted from Luke 17: 20-21 (The Message)
I'm seeing life increasingly through a lens of my contribution toward goodness, life, and grace and then my efforts that take away from these things. I'm only one life, just like any of us. And I want my life to be given toward positive contributions of the whole. That's the way of Jesus of Nazareth, whom I'm patterning my life after. So it seems to me that being a citizen of the whole is a choice that you can't assume. And it's the path I've chosen to follow.
