Tonight I thought and talked deep. I went to a gathering focused on some things near and deer to my heart and pursuits: What is the reality beyond what we see? Is life not more than money, reputation, and power? Who are the people most at peace with God? How does one experience peace with God? The thing about this event is that it wasn't a church gathering and I'm pretty sure my companions and I were the only Christians in attendance.
The location was the Jewish Community Center. The place was packed. It was being taped by three cameras. And it was a forum with five middle aged men who seem to be graced with a similarity they didn't intend to find when they began their pursuits as young men: they can't help but see the spiritual in the physical world. Two of them are renowned physicists, one psychologist/physicist, an irreverent Irish theologian who seems to have lost his faith, and a revered Russian-Jewish mystic. Three of the men appear in the recent movie, "What the Bleep do we know?" http://www.whatthebleep.com/ The gathering was sponsored by a local chapter for Kabbalah studies, so there was an obvious promotion for that track. A little bit of propaganda here and there, but we Christians have been known to be more forceful than that. ;) So I found myself fascinated by the dialogue taking place among the esteemed speakers. Here are some snippets:
"Everyone wants to be transformed, but no one wants to change."
- Dr. William Tiller in response to the question of why it has taken science so long to see the spiritual in the physical world. His response was aimed at the scientific community's posture toward debunking the spiritual throughout the post-Enlightenment Modern era.
"We live in an era of hunger for robust spirituality."
"Science breeds us to be skeptical of what does not deliver."
"The act of being a true scientist can and should change our character."
- Jeffrey Santinover http://www.satinover.com/ This guy really got my attention. I've read one of his earlier books on Homosexuality. He has this message that as you truly search you discover reality and that it changes you from the inside. And you've got to act for the greater good of society because of it. Check out his website. He's been an active guy in many realms of influence nationwide.
The essence of this gathering was that glimpses of the spiritual are all over the material world. This was a dialogue that brought together a segment of San Francisco. Peoples minds were intrigued and their mouths were chattering about the theories of the night. Now, I wouldn't begin to presume that each of the speakers interprets the data anywhere near the way I would as a follower of Jesus. But, it's worthy to note that Jesus' name came up several times tonight - all in a positive light (except for the belligerent theologian). And I wouldn't be surprised to find out if at least one of the men is a Christian. But that's not the point. The point is recognizing reality - life and goodness abound around us. Plugging into reality is a moment by moment goal for the child of God. Take a look around you...
I'm seeing life increasingly through a lens of my contribution toward goodness, life, and grace and then my efforts that take away from these things. I'm only one life, just like any of us. And I want my life to be given toward positive contributions of the whole. That's the way of Jesus of Nazareth, whom I'm patterning my life after. So it seems to me that being a citizen of the whole is a choice that you can't assume. And it's the path I've chosen to follow.

Wish I could have been there with you guys, it was our only night to host some friends who wanted to see my parents...
I think this contributes to the conversation around the spirit realm that the cognitive modern american has lost touch with.
Check out Dyer who is so close to the realm of God but does not source Jesus as the life...http://www.drwaynedyer.com/home/index.cfm
One thought to consider is that the DNA of the Kingdom or the sermon on the mount is in each of us...we are made in His image, even though we are fallen.
