I'm seeing life increasingly through a lens of my contribution toward goodness, life, and grace and then my efforts that take away from these things. I'm only one life, just like any of us. And I want my life to be given toward positive contributions of the whole. That's the way of Jesus of Nazareth, whom I'm patterning my life after. So it seems to me that being a citizen of the whole is a choice that you can't assume. And it's the path I've chosen to follow.

Family and Neighborhood Violence

Over the last 10 days we've had five shootings (including 1 drive-by shooting), two armed robberies, a group inflicted beating, and a stabbing on/near Mission Street. These are the same streets Marcia and the kids frequent for the great deals at Thrift Stores on used clothing and home decorations. It's also where the best burritos are found, so I'm there pretty often too.
Public safety is an issue in crime-ridden neighborhoods across the country. Our District Attorney, Kamala Harris, vistited the Mission District this week to hear resident's concerns and of course, show her support. She says we need more community services to offer alternatives for teens in the gang culture. She also says the key to breaking down the gang-turf mentality is to give kids a sense of identity and self-esteem not tied to territorial rivalries.
The Police and some residents are increasingly frustrated with the D.A. because her office refuses to prosecute many offenders taken into custody. They're often released the next day into community programs.
I find it interesting that rarely in talks about gang-violence are family and parenting issues brought up. Most of the conversations revolve around public services, law-enforcement, and public policy. It's like a blind-spot or a taboo that we can't talk about. What are we afraid of? Offending people? I'd rather see people offended and become better parents than for innocent people to die at the hands of reckless angry children with knives and guns. We'll never be able to offer enough services to keep every kid entertained.
The primary responsibility for children and their actions for (good or ill) must remain in the court of parents. Yes, we need communities that work together. Absolutely yes, social programs are a piece of the solution. And yes, it does take a village. But, let's not forget that parents are meant to be the primary influencers in our chuildren's lives. What our children learn about life, beliefs, and social responsibility begins with parents.
"Point your kids in the right direction--when they're old they won't be lost." Proverbs 22:6 (The Message)
