Clay House has a good deal of promise and hope. I was thinking about the condition the people who make up the church; about the character and quality of our times together; and about just what we're building together.
The people are certainly works in progress. Aren't we all? That's why we call ourselves "Clay House." As followers of Jesus, we're pursuing God and His purpose for our lives. God is forming us, like clay, in that process.
Our meetings are characterized by the hope of what we can be and do together. I see a gleam in people's eyes and I also see people wanting to take next steps in their growth. Man, that is exciting. That's what I was created to do - help people take those steps.
When I think about what we're doing - we've been working on the building for a while. It's needed a good deal of care and attention from years of neglect and scarcity. But, this building is just a thing to be used for a greater purpose. It is only a tool. If all our focus and energy is poured primarily into our own needs and programs - the church needs to disband. We are meant for something far greater than that. I believe even this small band of God's people in the city can become a force for good far beyond our own capacity. And I believe God wants that for us. I can't see the future, but the hope of the present seems like a good indicator.
"He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing." Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
I'm seeing life increasingly through a lens of my contribution toward goodness, life, and grace and then my efforts that take away from these things. I'm only one life, just like any of us. And I want my life to be given toward positive contributions of the whole. That's the way of Jesus of Nazareth, whom I'm patterning my life after. So it seems to me that being a citizen of the whole is a choice that you can't assume. And it's the path I've chosen to follow.
