I'm seeing life increasingly through a lens of my contribution toward goodness, life, and grace and then my efforts that take away from these things. I'm only one life, just like any of us. And I want my life to be given toward positive contributions of the whole. That's the way of Jesus of Nazareth, whom I'm patterning my life after. So it seems to me that being a citizen of the whole is a choice that you can't assume. And it's the path I've chosen to follow.

Coaches

Today, I was inspired by a middle aged baseball coach named Stacy. He's the coach of David's baseball team. Stacy recently completed a long-term volunteer coaching situation with a group of boys he'd coached from 4th grade through high school. He loves the game and to coach kids to be the best players they can be. He's faithful at what he does with a long term perspective. Not just this season, but seasons of life! I talked with a friend tonight who is a volunteer with the Sea Scouts. He does what he does for similar reasons, as a much younger man. We agreed that the influence of coaches, teachers, and mentors is a link that teaches children to be adults, boys to be men, and girls to become women. That's an important role. I'm thankful for the influencers in my children's life! In some ways they're partners in their development. Their influence will far outlive the hours they invest today!
